Magenta Pearl Flames on Black
Custom Guitar Painting by Eye Kandi sm
This is a custom painted guitar project we did awhile back. The idea on this guitar was going to be a magenta pearl set of custom flames on the original black paint. This is a great way for us to offer our clients a way to customize their guitar with out the expense of completely starting from ground up. Meaning not having to prime, seal, base the guitar & all the prep labor in between. So if your looking to customize your guitar but also want to stay on a smaller budget, this would be the way to go! We can prep your guitar body, add some airbrushed art work or a graphic design of your choice then clear the entire body & polish it to a glass like finish. It will look just like it came that way.
We knew that the magenta pearl paint was translucent & by not adding an opaque ground coat it would change the color of the magenta pearl. It gives it a more purplish pearl color, which is great because it tends to work with the black base. Pearlescent paint works with the reflection of light, so when there is not much light hitting the pearl the flames have a ghostly appearence, almost invisible. When direct light hits the pearl it shines the pearl’s color, kind of like a reflector.
We started off this custom guitar paint project by sending it over to be disassembled. Once it had been professionally disassembled, it was time for the guitar body to go through the stages of being prepped for paint.
After the guitar body was prepped, we started laying out the one of a kind custom flame design freehand with our fine line tape. Once the layout was fit to the guitar body, keeping in mind of making it flow with its shape & size. Also, working with the components & electronics to ensure it will look its best once completely assembled. The guitar was completely masked leaving only the flame art work exposed.
It was time to load up our airbrush with the pearlescent paint & execute the flame work.
Keeping in mind a good consistencey along the way. Pearl is very difficult for the eye to see without it being clear coated over on dark surfaces, so we rely on watching the paper mask around it to keep up the consistencey.
As you can see between the photo above & the photo below the magenta pearl is exactly that but you can also see what the effect is on a darker undercoat. Having good knowledge & experience in color, paint products & effects is very important in knowing what the end result will be. A well trained professional can tell you the after effects, so you don’t make a bad color decision. What is in our clients head is not always what its going to be in the end.
Its also our job as well trained professionals to know our products & materials well. Its our job to apply the least amount of material to create the desired effect. Too much material will be more costly to our clients but also creates more of a graphic edge, which in turn takes more clear coat to bury. This can result in higher costs for the customer as well as possible problems down the road such as peeling, flaking, cracking, checking & poor adhesion problems.
In the above & below photos here you can see the different effects the lighting & viewing angle give the pearled flame.
In the photo below you can see in the upper right corner where there is less light, the flame almost disappears.
Below is the guitar body clear coated, now off to be sanded, buffed & polished to a smooth glass like finish.
Check back soon, we should be updating this blog with a finished & assembled guitar photo so you can see a final with all the electronic components in place.
