We did this set in the Fall of 2009, the client wanted Blue Realistic Fire with a bunch of different skulls surrounded by the flames. We started with a Black basecoat but we can do it on just about any color basecoat, the colors just really pop off of dark colors like black.
Larry started by laying out the skulls in white, where they would be located.

On this particular project you'll notice the art work of skulls being applied above & below the rear seat mounting hole on the rear fender. We did this to accommodate the clients request that he have the option of running his full sofa seat or solo seat with the art work.

After all the skulls where laid out, it was time to layout the Realistic Fire in white.

Then it was time for a wash of blue candy over all the art work.

Then the fire was reworked more with the white.
Once again, a wash of candy blue was applied over the art work.

Now, more white was added to the fire really working it to give it that 3-dimensional feel.
The skulls were also reworked in the white to tighten up the detail & give them a bit more of a 3-dimensional feel as well.
After that, the art work was once again layered with a blue candy wash. Then white was applied to the flames tightening up the detail.

Again, a layer of candy blue was applied.

More airbrushing was done to the flames & skulls in the white to further detail them.

After a quick wash of the candy blue, they were given some more tight white detail to give the realistic fire & skulls a really hot feel. There is quite a bit of time involved, working back & forth with the white & candies. It's definetly not a simple process, it just really depends on how good you want it to look & how detailed you want it to be.
Once we were happy with the art work, it was off to clear coating, a resand, a second clear session. Then off to the final detail department for a smooth glass like buff & polish.
